Chapter 9

“Good for you,” Terri said when Camille called her the next morning.

“I was very proud of myself, actually,” Camille admitted. “It usually takes me hours to come up with the right reply, but I don’t think I could have done better than that one.”

“Pleasant?” Terri laughed. “His poor ego must have been shattered.”

“If it was, he didn’t let it show. He followed me out of the haunted house and then bought us all lunch. By that time, Brandon was done with work, so he joined in the fun and rode everything with Max and Molly and Katie. I spent the afternoon getting to know Seth better.”

“Maybe you should date Seth,” Terri suggested.

“He’s only forty-five and he isn’t my type, anyway.”

“Maybe I should date Seth.”

Camille laughed. “I can fix you up, if you want. He’s a bit young for you, but maybe he likes slightly older women.”

“Thanks for the slightly, but I’m six years older and I’m not really looking for a man, anyway. Being single agrees with me.”

“I’m not looking, either.”

“How was the kiss, though?”

Camille blushed. “It was a pretty good kiss,” she admitted.

“Pretty good?”

“I felt as if I was nineteen again. If I was the type to jump into bed with a man, I’d have jumped.”

Terri laughed. “Okay, then. There’s still some chemistry there.”

“Way too much. I can’t let myself fall for him.”

“Maybe he’s changed. He did move back to Ramsey, after all.”

“Just because he’s here at the moment doesn’t mean that he’s moved back. He’s staying at the Riverside and, while he’s talking about buying a house, he hasn’t actually made an offer anywhere.”

“You learned a lot from Seth.”

“We had a lot of time to talk. Apparently, Max is mostly here because his mother isn’t well, but Max doesn’t like to talk about her.”

“I heard he’s hired several people to look after her so that she isn’t ever alone,” Terri said.

“Seth wouldn’t talk about her at all, but I’ve heard the same rumors.”

“Do you think Max will leave Ramsey once he has his mother’s living arrangements sorted out?”

“I can’t imagine him staying for long, anyway,” Camille sighed.

“I thought you didn’t want him around?”

“I don’t, not really, but, oh, I don’t know. There’s a bit of me that still loves him and that bit of me can simply shut up now.”

Terri chuckled. “What are you doing today?” she changed the subject.

“I’m taking the kids back to the fair, of course. Has Thomas been yet?”

“We went last night for the music, but I told him we could go today so he could ride a few rides.”

“Want to meet us there? We’re going to head there around noon. I don’t expect Brandon to be out of bed much before that. I thought we’d get some lunch at the fair and then the kids could ride a few things and we could check out all of the booths before getting more food. We didn’t stay for the music last night, but we will tonight, more for the fireworks than for the bands, of course.
